CIIS 284 - Basic Economics (DL)

Welcome to CIIS 284 - Basic Economics (DL). This course has been designed to provide distance learning students with a solid understanding of economic principles and their relevance to today's technology-driven world. Economics plays a critical role in understanding how societies allocate scarce resources, how markets function, how businesses make decisions, and how governments influence economic outcomes.

As an online learner, you are expected to take an active role in your learning journey by engaging with course materials, participating in online discussions, completing assignments, and undertaking independent study. The course combines theoretical concepts with practical examples drawn from Ghana, Africa, and the global economy to enhance understanding and application.

Throughout the semester, students will explore key economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, demand and supply, consumer behaviour, production and costs, market structures, national income accounting, economic growth, inflation, and unemployment. These topics will equip students with the knowledge and analytical skills needed to understand economic events and make informed decisions in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

I encourage you to approach the course with curiosity and commitment, as economics provides valuable insights into many of the challenges and opportunities facing individuals, businesses, governments, and societies in the digital age.
